Georgian Royal Family Divorce
19 December, 2013
The official web site of The Royal Family of Georgia has announced the divorce of David Bagrationi and Ana Bagrationi. Davit Bagrationi on his part announced: “With much regret, I announce the end of my marriage with Anna Bagrationi, which I thank for the wonderful son we have in common , H.R.H.Giorgi Bagration Bagrationi, declared as future heir of the Bagrationi Dynasty by His Holiness Patriarch of All Georgia Ilia II on the day of His Baptism on 3 November 2013, who like his Father, Grandfather and ancestors, will hold the title of Prince of Mukhrani. Davit Batonishvili.”
This is the second divorce of the royal couple. The first one became famous – and was scandalous - but soon the couple reunited and the birth of Giorgi Bagration Bagrationi followed. The announcement of this second divorce suggests that the royal couple regarded its main function to be the conception and birth of a successor.
A royal family in Georgia has the support of the Patriarch. In one of his weekly sermons Ilia II suggested the possibility of a constitutional monarchy coming about in Georgia. This idea was received with joy by a large part of Georgian society.
The process of finding the proper candidates to become the royal couple has begun. Two years after Princess Anna was divorced, the Patriarchy of Georgia decided that the proper candidate for prince could be David Bagrationi, who came from Spain to settle in Georgia, and who is the representative of Mukhran Bagration nobility. Meetings with Anna, and her parents, were organized in the Patriarchy.
In 2008, when Patriarch Ilia II returned from Moscow where he attended the funeral of the Patriarch of Russia, Alexy II, he met the chief of the royal house, Prince Nugzar, and the bridegroom David and offered to set the wedding for April 2009 at Easter.
After the wedding Princess Anna and David went to Spain, where they have lived till now. She gave birth to the son Giorgi Bagration Bagrationi on 27 September.
