Parliament adopts changes in Election Code

Parliament adopted changes to the Election Code on 7 March. The parliamentary minority did not participate in the process as a sign of protest. The major changes made in the law are related to the direct election of mayors in 12 cities, as well as the heads (gamgebelis) and local councils (sakrebulos) of all municipalities. A minimal threshold of 50% to elect mayors and gamgebelis in the first voting round was introduced. The threshold for proportional, party-list voting in the provinces will be lowered from 5% to 4%. The number of party-list seats in most of the Sakrebulos will be increased. The changes also contain new mechanisms for additional state funding for political parties.
