John Bass to Become Diplomat of the Year 2011

The first diplomat award ceremony in Georgian media space took  place yesterday. Weekly English-language newspaper “Georgian Journal” along with the publishing house “Palitra” identified the Diplomat of the Year. The winner is the Ambassador of the US to Georgia Mr. John Bass. Prior to the event, Media Palitra has conducted a three-month poll involving local politicians, political analysts and political scientists. Accordingly, several candidates have been elicited. The winner was granted an award, exclusively designed for the ceremony. Special diplomas and prizes have been established for the participants of the ceremony by the sponsors and partners of the project, who happen to be Duty Free Alliance, Nemiroff, Glasses Store “Safilo”, Clinic “Total Charm”, Radisson Blu Iveria hotel, Jewellery Store “Christal”, book store network “Biblusi”, Hotel Tbilisi Marriot, Courtyard Marriot, etc. These prizes were granted to the representatives of different companies and embassies, who won in the competitions taking place during the event.

The primary purpose of the project is to make the Diplomatic Corps more active in promoting Georgia and further development of democracy in the country. Moreover, Georgian Journal intends to revitalize the relations between the Georgian media and the Diplomatic Corps.
Within the scope of the project, representatives of diplomatic corps, international as well as local non-government organizations, politicians, experts and businessmen have attended the event. Journalists of printed and electronic media, along with the employees of “Media Palitra Publishers” have been invited to the final event to cover the ceremony and its results.
From this year on, “Georgian Journal” and Media-house Palitra will establish Diplomat Award Ceremony as an annual tradition.

On 10 April at 7 pm at the Hungarian Embassy, Ambassador Sandor Szabo hosted the graduates of the Central European University (CEU) from the past 20 years. The President of Georgia Giorgi Margvelashvili was the most honorable guest, together with representatives of diplomatic corps, as well as the alumni themselves.
The Hungarian Ambassador to Georgia, Mr. Sandor Szabo, noted that currently 243 CEU alumni live in Georgia. ”It is in particular a great honor for me today to welcome His Excellency Mr. Giorgi Margvelashvili, President of Georgia, on these few hundred square meter of Hungarian territory, who himself graduated from the Central European University during the last academic year held in Prague in 1993-1994,” Noted the Hungarian diplomat.

Professional Education Festival at Tbilisi Concert Hall
The Tbilisi event hall hosted the Professional Education Festival organized by the Ministry of Education and Science with the support of Liberty Bank. The festival took place in the big hall of the philharmonic building. Different universities, schools and organizations were presented which provided future students with educational background information. The festival also focused on the employment of current and future students and representatives of different organizations who are willing to employ professionals were presented.
Marriage re-defined in Constitution
In line with the anti-discrimination bill, the current Georgian Government has decided to define marriage in the Constitution. Gharibashvili has proposed that the concept of family in the constitution should be defined as a “union of man and woman.”
New Vision for better Justice for Juveniles
On 31 March, in Tbilisi at the Holiday Inn Hotel, NGO CiDA organized a conference “New Vision - New Challenge in Juvenile Justice Issue.” The event was organized in the framework of the project “Support for Juvenile Justice Reform in National Minority Communities of Kvemo Kartli and Samtskhe-Javakheti.” The project is implemented by CiDA and funded by the EU.
61% of respondents - NATO should grant MAP to Georgia
Most of the IRI respondents (61%) believe NATO should grant MAP to Georgia at the next summit. 31% didn’t answer the question. 8% is against the alliance to grant MAP to Georgia. 58% of the respondents fully support Georgia joining NATO, though this figure has decreased compared to last year when it was still 61%.
This national representative survey was carried out from19 February to 13 March 2014. 3992 Georgian residents aged 18 year and older were interviewed face-to-face. The margin of error does not exceed 1.5%.
The 75th anniversary of the first president of Georgia
On 31 March, the first President of Georgia, Zviad Gamsakhurdia,would have been 75 years old. In connection of this date several events were held and are also planned for the near future. On 28 March, a conference was held in the Conference Hall of the National Library of Parliament, which lasted for several days and the closing ceremony was held on 31 march. Mr. Zviad has an immeasurable and invaluable role in our country’s history, as a patriot, as a national hero, scholar, writer, translator, and publicist. It’s not surprising, that in the family of the Georgian writer, big classic Constantine Gamsakhurdia was brought up to be such amazing person. His country Georgia was the main motivation in his hard life.

The Burdulis’ FAMILY
Elguja (guja) Burduli is everyone’s favorite, famous Georgian actor. He was born in Tbilisi and graduated from the Technical University. Since 1974 he started actively playing film roles. He is not an actor by profession, but a creator of memorable movie roles, including the faces of the great kings of Georgia. The drama “The Sun of the Sleepless”, Georgian filmmaker, Teimuraz Babluani’s in which Mr. Guja played doctor Gela, is a role which made him more loved and remembered by the public.
EU Funds 34 Civil Society Projects
On 6 March, civil society organizations, press and media representatives attended a CSO fair and press conference, during which 34 new European Union grants for civil society projects were launched, at the Karvasla Exhibition Centre. EU’s support totals EUR 4.8 million. The projects will focus on human rights, democratization, capacity building of civil society in order to support citizens’ rights and access to public services, and citizens’ participation in policy making on economic development and justice. The launching ceremony was also a good opportunity to recognize the role of civil society in Georgia’s EU integration.

EU Awards Grants to four Organizations
On 11 March, the European Union awarded four grants in support of small farmers in Georgia within the ENPARD program. The event took place in the village of Tsinamdzghvriantkari (near Saguramo) with the participation of local stakeholders. Now Avto Varsimashvili, owner of Liberty Theatre, is staging Richard III, in a production combining aninteresting performance, directing, painting and decoration with wonderful musicsuitable for every scene. ADB Bank for Georgia Water System
